Day of the African Child
Sat 17 Jun
A day observed globally in honour of the courage of the South African children who in 1976 tragically lost their lives protesting against inferior education and the right to be taught in their own language.
Day of the African Child has been celebrated internationally since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity. Tanks Arts Centre is proud to support the African community of Cairns in presenting this exceptional event in memory of the brave children who tragically died protesting against injustice and inequality in the apartheid regime in Soweto, South Africa.
All are welcome to attend an inspired evening of reflection and celebration of African culture; cuisine, music, art and dance. Headlined by international act Asanti Dance Theatre of Ghana and featuring performances by local drum and dance ensemble Djansa, and Cairns local African children and youth.
